Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) has offered some details on an attack at the residence of former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa.

Police is treating the attack, which happened at about 3am on January 03 in Kimbejja Cell, Budo Ward, Kyengera Town Council, as a case of “attempted aggravated robbery.”

KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said police from Nsangi had swiftly swung in action after Munyagwa reported that he was under attack.

“A swift response led by the Division Police Commander prevented the assailants from gaining access to Hon Munyagwa’s home. The timely reporting by Hon Munyagwa and the rapid response of the police team on patrol played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of life and property,” said Owoyesigire.

But the attackers hit Munyagwa’s guard. He is receiving treatment at the Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala.

“During the incident, the security guard, Benjamin Mpaka, sustained a head injury from a sharp object. He was promptly transported to Mulago for medical treatment. Fortunately, no one inside the residence was harmed,” added Owoyesigire.

Police officers have arrested one person in connection with the attack. No shooting happened at Munyagwa’s home, Owoyesigire further noted.

“The police team introduced K9 units to the scene although their efforts were hindered by a heavy rain downpour. Despite the challenging weather conditions, one suspect attempting to flee the scene in a Datsun pick-up with registration number UAK 182A was apprehended. The suspect is currently in custody, aiding ongoing police investigations,” continued Owoyesigire.

“Contrary to misleading social media posts, no shooting occurred at Hon Munyagwa’s residence. The assailants were armed only with sharp objects.”

The attack happened hours after gunmen attempted to assassinate Pastor Aloysius Bujjingo. During the shooting, Bujjingo’s driver sustained injuries he later succumbed to. (See Details Here).

In February 2022, the FDC party claimed Munyagwa had been kidnapped. The former MP would later resurface and was hospitalized. (Read Story Here).
