ICT and National Guidance Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi has used his powers to appoint ex-minister George William Nyombi Thembo the new Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director.
Nyombi Thembo, a former junior ICT minister, will serve as UCC ED for the next five years.
Aged 59, Nyombi Thembo has been at UCC since being dropped out cabinet in 2016. He was the director in charge of Uganda Communications Universal Services Access Fund (UCUSAF), previously called Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF).
He was one of the final our candidates from a pool of about 70 Ugandans who applied for the job of UCC ED when it was advertised two months ago.
Nyombi Thembo will take over from Eng Irene Kaggwa Ssewankambo. Eng Kaggwa has steered the commission for three years since replacing Eng Godfrey Mutabazi in acting capacity in February 2020.
Eng Kaggwa is the Director for Engineering and Communication Infrastructure. She had also applied for the job alongside Nyombi Thembo, Corporate Affairs Director Fred Otunnu and Industry Affairs Director Julianne Mweheire.
Under Eng Kaggwa, UCC has attempted to switch off hundreds of radio stations. UCC has also failed to push for the lifting of the ban on Facebook in Uganda. (See Details Here and There).
