Ex-Minister Gen Elly Tumwine Reportedly Hospitalized

Former security minister Gen Elly Tumwine is reportedly in critical condition in a hospital in the capital Kampala.

Although it is not clear what Gen Tumwine is suffering from, reports suggest that he was rushed to Nakasero Hospital where he is being treated.

The administration of the national army, the UPDF, is yet to officially speak on Gen Tumwine’s health condition.

Aged 68, Gen Tumwine is credited for firing the first shot at Kabamba Barracks, sparking off Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s guerilla war against Milton Obote in 1981.

With Museveni taking power in 1986, following a five-year bush war that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of Ugandans, Gen Tumwine served in several positions in the military and government.

In 2020, while still serving as security minister, Tumwine appeared frail at the Uganda Media Centre to address reporters. This raised questions on the state of his health, especially given that it was during the Covid19 pandemic.

Tumwine was dropped in 2021 as Museveni named a new cabinet. (Read Story Here).

After being dropped from cabinet, Tumwine started spitting fire and calling on Museveni, whom he said was drunk on power, to prepare for a smooth transition or wait to become a worse ‘Ngamba-Nyenka (Dictator), and throw Uganda into chaos. (Read Stories Here, There and Even Here).

But former fellow bush war fighters rebuked Gen Tumwine for attempting to blow his trumpet, and for remembering to advise Museveni to leave when it was too late. (Read Stories Here and There).
