The European Union (EU) has called on the Uganda Police Force (UPF) to release protesters in support of the EU Parliament’s resolution, halting Uganda’s oil projects, particularly the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (Eacop).
While groups of protesters against the EU Parliament’s resolution were previously allowed to protest outside the offices of the EU in Kampala, security operatives have today, Tuesday, October 04, sought to block protesters in support of the European Union Parliament.
A number of university students were blocked from proceeding with their march to EU offices in Kampala where they wanted to deliver their petition in support of the resolution by the Members of the European Parliament.
Following the arrest of some of the university students, the EU in Uganda demanded the release of these protesters, arguing that what is good for the goose is also good for the gander.
The European Union in Uganda said that pro-EU Parliament resolution protestors and those against the same resolution should be given an equal opportunity to express their views.
The EU Uganda country office went on to note that the Museveni government and state security agencies should borrow a leaf from their (the European Union) office which has welcomed supporters in support and those against the resolution.
“EU is a strong believer of freedom of expression and demonstration and values democratic debates. As we received petitioners against EU Parliament in Uganda, we welcomed those in favour,” read a short statement issued by the EU in Uganda.
“We call on Police to release students arrested today as they demonstrated in front of our European Union office.”
