A national event in the Northern Uganda district of Nebbi has ‘flopped’ after government officials run away shortly after learning that the country’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni would not be coming to attend as chief guest.
Today is the International Day of Older Persons. The day was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly (Resolution 45/106) on December 14, 1990, with the assembly voting to commit all members states to mark October 01 as the International Day of Older People. The world would mark the day the following year on October 01, 1991 for the first time.
Today, Uganda joined the rest of the world in marking the International Day of Older Persons, with the main event Nebbi Town SS.
President Museveni, who recently celebrated his 78th birthday was expected to be the chief guest at the event.
But some people would later learn that the General from Rwakitura would not be coming to attend.
This made some district leaders, Members of Parliament (MPs), locals and other people who had come to attend to walk away from the venue, probably seeing no reason as to why they should attend an event that the president would not grace his presence with.
It was not clear why Gen Museveni had not attended.
Last week, an opposition MP shocked Parliament when he asked about Museveni’s health and whereabouts. (Read Story Here).
But this publication understands that Gen Museveni attended the Next Media Park launch in Naguru on Friday. The event was a show of power and money in the Ugandan media landscape. (Read Story Here).
