Education ministry officials meet ahead of announcement on school reopening for non-candidate classes

Uganda’s education ministry officials are expected to hold more meeting through January 26 ahead before making the final decision on reopening schools for non-candidates and non-finalists.

In October 2020, government reopened education institutions to candidates and finalists after over six months of closure as a Covid19 prevention measure.

Recently, education ministry’s permanent secretary Alex Kakooza has dismissed reports of any decision to reopen schools in February 2021.

“Contrary to media reports, government has not yet agreed upon the re-opening of schools and higher institutions of learning for non-candidate classes,” said Kakooza in a statement.

But we have learnt that officials at the ministry are holding meetings before minister and first lady Janet Museveni can announce a reopening schedule.

An announcement was expected towards the end of this week or early next week, sources told The Pearl Times.

Minister Museveni was expected to brief cabinet after meeting officials from her ministry.

Cabinet would then discuss suggestions fronted by education ministry in consultation with a joint taskforce that includes experts from the health docket.
