According to a tweet by EC spokerson Paul Bukenya on Saturday, December 26, the areas where campaigns have been banned are categorised by Ministry of health as districts with high spread of Covid-19.

”The EC has suspended campaign meetings in districts/cities categorized by Ministry of Health as having high spread of Covid19,” Bukenya’s Tweet read

The suspension is said to take immediate effect on Boxing Day.

“From 26/12/20, no campaign meetings will be held in Mbarara, Kabarole, Luwero, Kasese, Masaka, Wakiso, Kabarole, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo, Kampala and Tororo,” Bukenya tweeted

This comes just hours after the Ministry of Heath on Friday confirmed 446 new Covid-19 infections as cases rose to 33,360 with 245 virus deaths.

It should be noted that Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) this week asked government to suspend elections till 2023 and allow president Museveni to keep incharge till them.

This has attracted different sentiments even between the religious leaders questioning the reasoning behind such suggestion when the country is remaining with two weeks to general elections on 14th January.
