DON’T SAY WE NEVER WARNED YOU: Bobi Wine Warns Kenyans as William Ruto MP Reveals Plan to Remove Term Limits

Ugandan opposition leader and 2021 presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has warned Kenyans, telling them not to be shocked if President Dr William Samoei Ruto’s administration amends the country’s Constitution to remove term limits to allow the 55-year-old newly sworn in head of state and government rule for more than the 10 years provided for in the country’s supreme law.

A Member of Parliament from President Ruto’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Kenya Kwanza political coalition has revealed that he and other MPs are working on a constitutional term limit to knock the term limit clause from the Constitution to allow the current leader rule until he is aged 75.

Instituted in 1992 before that year’s presidential elections, the two-term limit came after Section 2A of Kenya’s then Constitution was repealed. Nearly two decades later, the country welcomed a new Constitution and the presidential term limit was not touched. But barely a year in office, Ruto’s UDA MPs seem to be ready to remove this democratic safeguard from the supreme law of the land.

According to Farah Salah Yakub, the Fafi MP, he and his colleagues are proposing a constitutional amendment Bill that will see the term limit removed to make Ruto become president until he turns 75 years. Farah Salah Yakub has been quoted as saying that the MPs working on the proposed amendment have held discussions behind closed doors, and that the plot is progressing well.

Yakub also revealed that the proposers of the constitutional amendment bill are now expected to convene and make a draft of their bill before presenting it before the National Assembly for further steps.

“We want to tell Kenyans that the limit on two terms should be relooked. We want it to be changed to an age limit where when one gets to 75 years then he or she cannot contest,” said Yakub. “We will come up with an amendment Bill to try to change this because we want the requirement to be on age limit and not terms. If a president is doing a good job, then he or she should not be limited by the terms.”

BOBI WINE WARNS KENYANS

Now, Bobi Wine, the singer and politician who came second to Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni in the 2021 presidential election, has told Kenyans to take Yakub’s move very seriously and oppose it, saying that it would be an entrenchment of Musevenism in Kenyan politics.

Bobi Wine said that Kenyans should not ignore Yakub’s revelation, predicting that what has begun as a statement by just one MP may soon or later become a big matter and an amendment made out of the move.

“Dear Kenyans, BE VIGILANT. Save your country from Musevenism. This may come off as a lone MP making a ridiculous suggestion, but this is how it starts. Exactly how Museveni began schemes to remove TERM and AGE limits. Defend your Constitution before it’s too weak to defend you!” he wrote.

In 2005, Uganda’s MPs removed the constitutional term limit to allow Museveni rule beyond two terms. In 2017, Parliament removed the age limit clause from the Constitution to allow Museveni rule until he gets tired or dies. Museveni’s son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has since made a shocking revelation about replacing his father as President in 2026 while Museveni’s supporters have continued to express support for him to seek reelection in the next election in 2026.
