Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga has rebuked Ugandans who have been castigating MPs for pocketing Shs200m each to buy cars.
Parliament began wiring the Shs200m vehicle money to each of the 529 MPs.
But Ugandans were up in arms, wondering if vehicles for MPs were a priority, especially as the country battles a deadly Covid19 Second Wave.
The MPs get a relatively better package compared to other Ugandan workers. (See: Here’s what else your MP will get – besides the Shs200m Car).
But LoP Mpuuga says it is dishonest of Ugandans to criticize MPs for taking the Shs200m.
He added that MPs should get the required amounts of money to do their job.
“Are we dealing with an honest government and honest people. It is very dangerous to have desperate leaders. MPs should be facilitated to do their jobs,” Mpuuga told NBS Frontline.
“Why do we engage in dishonest conversations every after five years? Why don’t we handle this during elections once and for all?”
Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo challenged Mpuuga to rally opposition MPs to account for the money.
Opondo said the MPs got such huge sums of money for cars but spend a small fraction on cheap cars.
In response, Mpuuga said: “The MPs won’t spend all the Shs200m because they are the government in their constituencies.”
