In what is being seen as an act stoking diplomatic escalation, Uganda’s national army, UPDF, has suspended defence cooperation with Germany over ambassador’s ‘conduct.’
Acting UPDF and defence ministry spokesperson Col Chris Magezi announced the suspension of UPDF defence cooperation with Germany hours after first son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s political organization, Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), announced protests at the German embassy next month.
PLU secretary general and Kasambya MP David Kabanda announced the date for the protests which he said would be “energetic.”
“The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) shall hold an energetic demonstration at the Germany Embassy on 5th June, 2025,” announced Kabanda.
In announcing the suspension of defence ties, Col Chris Magezi, the acting director defence public information, said the decision would be implemented immediately.
Magezi explained that the decision to suspend defence cooperation with Germany was hinged on intelligence reports that Ambassador Matthias Schauer was involved in “subversive activities” against Uganda.
“The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has with immediate effect suspended all ongoing defence and military cooperation activities with the Federal Republic of Germany,” announced Magezi.
“The decision is in response to credible intelligence reports that the current German Ambassador to Uganda His Excellency Mathias Schauer is actively engaged in subversive activities in the country.”
The UPDF publicist added that “the suspension will remain in force until the full resolution of the matter of the Ambassador’s involvement with hostile pseudo political-military forces operating in the country against the Ugandan government.”
The suspension of defence ties between Uganda’s UPDF and Germany come days after the army alleged that intelligence reports prove that Ambassador Schauer was involved in funding rebel groups plotting to remove Museveni from power. (See Details Here and There).
It should also be remembered that Gen Muhoozi threatened sanctions against EU ambassadors, warning them to stop playing with fire, after meeting opposition leader Bobi Wine. (See Details Here and There).
Months ago, Muhoozi accused US ambassador to Uganda of disrespecting President Museveni, his father, and of undermining Uganda’s sovereignty — demanding that he apologizes or leaves Uganda — as reported Here and There.
