Ugandan security agencies have confirmed the killing of 10 people in the district of Kamwenge. The shocking killings are being linked to Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels whom President Yoweri Museveni recently said were steadily being decimated.
But it seems that even as some of the rebels and their commanders have either been killed or arrested in recent months, the remnants are regrouping to wreak havoc.
The suspected ADF assailants launched an attack at about 2am in the morning of December 19, raiding Kyitehurizi Village in Kyabandara Parish, Kamwenge Sub-county in Kamwenge District where they killed 10 people.
According to Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson Vicent Twesige, two of the deceased have been identified as Margaret Banyazaki, 60, and a one Tugume, 25.
The armed assailants also broke into a store, stole food items and disappeared into a national park.
“Preliminary findings reveal that ten assailants, armed with SMG rifles, attacked and fatally burnt ten people in Kyitehurizi trading center, Kyabandara parish, Kamwenge sub-county, located near Kibale National Park,” said Twesige.
“After the incident, the assailants proceeded to break into the store of Baguma Richard, 35 years old, and looted 300 kgs of beans, a sack of Irish potatoes, 03 trays of eggs, and 50 kgs of maize. They also set ablaze a motorcycle Reg No. UFC 851T.
“After the incident, the assailants headed towards Kibale National Park.”
No arrests have been made yet.
“Upon receiving the information, our officers responded to the scene immediately, deploying canine units alongside UPDF Personnel. A manhunt led by Joint Security Agencies is currently underway, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses,” added the police spokesperson.
