Ssegirinya displays his foot during a recent court session.
Deputy speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has spoken out on Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya’s health condition.
Ssegirinya remains detained at Luzira Prison on remand over a raft of charges, including murder, attempted murder, terrorism and inciting violence.
He was days ago denied bail.
Earlier on October 28, Leader of Opposition in Parliament Mathias Mpuuga (Nyendo-Mukungwe) led Francis Zaake (Mityana Municipality), Joyce Bagala (Mityana District Woman) and Joseph Ssewungu (Kalungu West) in visiting Ssegirinya who is currently admitted at the Murchison Bay hospital, Luzira Prison.
“Ssegirinya’s health continues to worsen with each day that passes by,” said the MP’s NUP party in a statement.
“We continue to condemn his continued detention despite the illness and demand for his release and that of the many other political prisoners who continue to rot in jails.”
But Among said there was no need to worry.
She also hinted on referring Ssegirinya abroad to receive specialized treatment.
“I can confirm that Ssegirinya is in hospital and we are working to ensure that he is referred and gets better treatment. There is no cause for alarm. We are working with government in this regard,” said the deputy speaker.
“If the Member is referred, we have the capacity to treat him in any part of the world. We are working with the responsible persons to see that he gets the best treatment.”
