DECISION TIME: Museveni to Choose Between Another Lockdown and Full Reopening after Today’s Briefing from Covid19 Taskforce

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni is expected to make a decision on whether to fully reopen the economy or announce another lockdown in the wake of a rise in Covid19 cases.

According to ICT and National Guidance Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi, President Museveni will on December 27 hold a meeting with the Covid19 Taskforce.

The taskforce is expected to brief the head-of-state on the status of Covid19 in the country ahead of the planned reopening of the economy.

In his previous address on the Covid19 response, President Museveni had insisted the full reopening of the economy would happen in January 2022.

But fears from the new Omicron variant as well as the rise daily reported cases in the week leading to Christmas might compel Uganda to institute another lockdown.

Uganda registered 743 new cases on Christmas Day (December 25); 1,116 on December 24; 1,251 on December 23; and 1,093 on December 22.

Some countries have recently tightened restrictions over a spike in cases.
