Criminal gang dealing in fake dollars arrested in city hotel raid

Uganda Police Force (UPF) says its Directorate of Crime Intelligence and Katwe territorial police have recovered counterfeit dollars to the tune of $320,000 in a raid on Linca Hotel in Ndeeba, Kampala.

A statement by the police said seven suspects were arrested in the raid.

Police named the suspects as:

Robert IvanMuliisa: male adult and resident of Mpererwe

Hillary Mark Asiimwe: male adult and resident of Namasuba Kikajjo

Rosemary Tukwasibwe: female adult and resident of Kamwenge Rugonjo

Geoffrey Gatete: male adult and resident of Kyebando Katale Zone

Anitah Tusasirwe: female adult and resident of Ndejje

Moses Hadengho: male adult and resident of Masajja A

“They were thoroughly surveilled over a couple of months, for defrauding victims, by selling the fake US dollars at prices lower than the prevailing exchange rates and related multiplicity scams,” police noted.

The force further revealed that the recovered fake dollars will be sent to the central bank (Bank of Uganda) for “further forensic analysis.”

The arrested face charges of dealing in forged currency notes, counterfeiting and uttering counterfeit currency notes.

“We would like to warn all unscrupulous business persons who engage in fake US dollars and other illicit transactions that our multi agency task teams are robust and will crack them down and bring them to justice,” police cautioned.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant especially when approached by dealers fronting transactions that appear so lucrative.”
