ICT and National Guidance Minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi says President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni will go ahead to fully reopen the economy next month.
Minister Dr Baryomunsi was one of the top government officials that attended the December 27 meeting between Museveni and the Covid19 Taskforce at Rwakitura in Kiruhura District.
After the meeting, Baryomunsi was quoted as saying that Museveni will fully reopen the economy in January 2022.
But the Minister said not all sectors of the economy would reopen at once.
However, he added, all sectors will fully reopen within January 2022.
Schools will be the first to reopen on January 10 after almost two years of closure.
Baryomunsi further revealed that the meeting tasked health minister Dr Jane Ruth Aceng to table a statutory instrument before Parliament detailing penalties for Ugandans who flout Covid19 prevention guidelines.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has also told locals of igayaza Town Council in Kakumiro District that President Museveni will fully reopen next month despite the spike in Covid19 cases.
In the past 10 days, Uganda has registered a spike in daily Covid19 cases, with the new infections crossing the 1,000 mark on some days.
The Prime Minister urged Ugandans to follow prevention guidelines even after the lifting of the lockdown.
“At first we had decided to put another lockdown but we realized that Ugandans have suffered a lot during the lockdown,” said PM Nabbanja.
“So, we decided that it is your cardinal responsibility to look after yourself. We are not going to come and tell you to wear a mask every time. Even when you get sick right now, the responsibility of treating you was given to the VHTs; in other words, the responsibility was given to you as a Ugandan to protect your self from getting infected to Covid19.”
