President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has reappointed Zephaniah Ofwono Opondo as the spokesperson of the Government of Uganda as well as the Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre.

Ofwono Opondo will hold this position for three more years until 2025 when Gen Museveni is expected to replace him with another person.

For three times in a row, Museveni has renewed Ofwono Opondo’s contract as Media Centre boss and government spokesperson.

Ofwon Opondo was first appointed to this position in 2013.

By the time his renewed contract expires in 2025, Ofwono Opondo will be the longest serving Uganda Media Centre Executive Director.

In total, Opondo will have served in this position for 12 year.

Created in 2005, the Uganda Media Centre was established to help manage and professionalize government’s public relations function and to, generally, offer professional media and communication services to government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Other roles include accrediting international or foreign journalists to report from Uganda as well as making all the necessary preparations for government press briefings.

Ofwono Opondo has today, August 30, confirmed his reappointment as the Uganda Media Centre boss.

“Reappointed: President Yoweri Museveni has reappointed me as Executive Director, Uganda Media Center for three years from July 2022,” he announced.

“I am grateful for his continued trust in me and look forward to working with colleagues in Government of Uganda in serving the public better.”

The reappointment comes as great relief for Ofwono Opondo who some people had claimed had been fired while others claimed that he had resigned. (Read Story Here).

The reappointment also comes weeks since Ofwono Opondo nearly punched Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago during a live TV show. Lukwago has since demanded Shs500m in compensation while Ofwono Opondo has publicly apologized. (Read Stories Here, There and Over There).
