Emmanuel Omoding, son to former MP Patrick Okabe, has been elected Serere County MP, replacing his father who died in December 2022.
Sylvia Cheptegel Nangendo, the Returning Officer for Serere Electoral District, declared Omoding winner after adding up the number of votes cast as recorded on each Declaration of Results Form in accordance with Section 53 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.
Omoding, an independent candidate, garnered 15,638 votes, beating his closest challenger Philip Oucur, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), who managed 13,206 votes.
In third place was Alice Alaso, the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) candidate who was backed by main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), with 3,335 votes.
Independent candidate Martin Onguruco, who polled 2,823, followed while Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate Emmanuel Eratu trailed with 1,252 votes.
The total number of valid votes cast was 35,954 while the total number of invalid or rejected ballot papers was 812.
At 09:50pm, the Serere District Returning Officer declared Omoding, the son of the late MP Okabe, as the duly elected MP.
“Accordingly, as Returning Officer for Serere Electoral District and in accordance with Section 58(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, (as Amended) I declare Omoding Emmanuel who has obtained the largest number of votes to be the elected candidate for Serere County Constituency, Serere Electoral District,” Cheptegei announced.
