Lawyers of National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine are working around the clock to file a petition challenging the victory of National Resistance Movement (NRM)’s Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni in the recently concluded presidential election.
According to results released by the Electoral Commission (EC), Museveni garnered 58 per cent of the total votes cast, against Bobi Wine’s 35 per cent.
Bobi Wine believes the election was rigged in favour of Museveni.
He has now given instructions to his lawyers of Wameli and Company Advocates to challenge the results in court.
Bobi Wine’s NUP camp claims it has evidence of vote rigging, captured in declaration of results forms’ inconsistences, video and photographic evidence.
The Judiciary is expecting Bobi Wine’s petition on February 01 after the politician’s lawyers notified the Supreme Court on January 29.
It is not clear if other presidential candidates are planning to file petitions.
Previous presidential election petitions by opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye and former Prime minister Amama Mbabazi didn’t cause nullification of results.
But Bobi Wine hopes the court will overturn Museveni’s victory, or order for a fresh election.
