Uganda Police Force (UPF) has confirmed that a marine accident on Lake Victoria has claimed the lives of at least 20 people.
At least 34 people were said to be on the boat that capsized on Lake Victoria on August 2, 2023, according to SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson.
The accident happened at around 5am on Wednesday.
Onyango said nine people have been rescued while search operations for the rest continue.
According to the police spokesperson, “the boat was carrying bags of charcoal, fresh foods, silver fish among others.”
Onyango attributed the accident to overloading and bad weather.
“Rescue efforts are underway with teams from Police Marines, UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit and local community on the waters trying to locate the missing people,” he added.
“We appeal to members of the public who travel on waters to always wear life jackets and not to over load their vessels.”
This boat accident happened a few weeks after nine people perished in a River Nile boat accident. It later emerged that these boat accident victims were Hunting for New Jobs after Indian Boss Refused to Pay Them. (See Details Here).
