Chaos as Police Fire Tear gas, Live Bullets to Disperse Makerere Students at NUP Guild Assembly

Main opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party has accused police and the military of dispersing its general assembly at Makerere University.

On June 24, the Makerere Chapter of the Kamwokya-based party had planned to hold its students’ general assembly.

The political party had sent its secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya, a former Makerere University guild speaker, to officiate at the event. But NUP says that security was irked by Rubongoya’s attendance and swung in action to disperse the meeting.

“On learning that Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya had been invited as the Chief Guest at the students General Assembly which had been organised by the NUP-Makerere Chapter, the police and military aggressively responded by firing teargas and live bullets directly into the students,” said the party in a short statement.

“We condemn the barbaric actions of the security forces in their continued infringement on the students’ academic freedoms.”

The party also accused police and the military of inflicting injuries on students attending the assembly, and of “brutally” arresting some of them.

Those arrested include: Calvin Mwesiga Mugambwa, Price Bbosa, Roy Rugumayo, and Kenneth Katushabe, who are all seeking NUP’s endorsement in the forthcoming Makerere University guild elections.
