The Omukama (king) of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, Solomon Gafabusa Iguru, is seriously sick, it has emerged.

On June 11, Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom celebrated the 28th coronation anniversary of Omukama Gafabusa in Hoima City.

Omukama Gafabusa was absent during the celebrations, and it has been confirmed that he is sick and is undergoing treatment.

Members of the royal family and other top kingdom officials asked subjects and other well wishers of the monarchy to pray for the Omukama.

In mid-May 2022, some kingdom officials had announced that the June 11 coronation anniversary would not take place over the Omukama’s health.

“We cannot hold the Empango celebrations for this year. We are in a situation which cannot allow the king to perform his rituals which are the significant part of Empango,” Fred Mugenyi, the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Chief Prince, had revealed.

But the royal family later met and agreed to celebrate the coronation anniversary without the king.

President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, who was supposed to attend as the chief guest, did not attend the coronation anniversary.

Gen Museveni was represented by former Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), and now State Minister for Internal Affairs, Gen David Muhoozi. President Museveni sent Shs50m to support the coronation anniversary.

In his message read for him by Gen Muhoozi, Museveni emphasized unity. He also praised the good working relationship between the central government and Bunyoro Kingdom. Museveni also saluted the monarchy for the development projects initiated by the kingdom.

The president, through his minister Muhoozi, also implored residents in Bunyoro region to strategically position themselves to tap into the opportunities presented by the oil and gas sector.

Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Prime Minister Owek Andrew Byakutaaga Ateenyi used the occasion to rubbish, as misinformation and lies, being spread by those behind the campaign against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) development project. Premier Byakutaaga made it clear that the kingdom was in full support of the project.
