Kenya’s Independent and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati has today, Monday, August 15, declared William Samoei Ruto of Kenya Kwanza and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), the duly elected president of the Republic.
William Ruto has been the deputy president of the Republic of Kenya for the past 10 years and will now take over the highest office in the land.
Chebukati made the announcement at the Bomas of Kenya in presence of diplomats, religious leaders and politicians across the political divide.
Chebukati said Ruto had garnered 7,176,141 votes, equivalent to 50.49 per cent while his closest challenger Raila Amollo Odinga garnered 6,942,930 votes, equivalent to 48.5 per cent.
Kenyans went to the polls on Tuesday, August 09, 2022. Kenyans have been waiting for the results, especially after media houses withdrew their tallies. After days of waiting, Chebukati and his team declared Ruto president-elect.
All the winner of the presidential election needed was 50 per cent plus one of the valid votes cast and at least 25 per cent of the votes in more than 24 counties
Ruto is now expected to take over from Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, the man who refused to support his deputy and choose veteran opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga of the Azimio La Umoja Coalition.
Nearly 80 years of age, this election was considered Odinga’s last chance at the presidency. Odinga, the ODM supremo, was running for the fifth time.
