The head of security at the headquarters of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP), Achileo Kivumbi, has been arrested, the leaders of the political organization said in the evening of August 1, 2024.
Bobi Wine described the incident as “violent abduction.” It was not readily clear which security agency had ‘arrested’ Achileo Kivumbi and the reason behind the evening arrest, or if any summons had been issued prior to the incident.
But Bobi Wine said “several heavily armed men, moving in a Noah Reg. No. UAP 164P trailed him and manhandled him as he approached his home.” The NUP leader also claimed that the group of suspected security officers had “immediately started beating him up as they dragged him into the vehicle and drove away.”
In a statement condemning the arrest, NUP said Achileo Kivumbi, who is part of the Bobi Wine’s security detail, was “abducted from his residence in Nansana.” Eddie Mutwe, who is also party of Bobi Wine’s security team, said “four men dressed in military uniforms” had taken Achileo Kivumbi, and that he was “beaten before he was forced to enter their drone car and driven away to unknown destination.”
NUP expressed concern that “such impunity continues to prevail despite court rulings against the same.” NUP Secretary General added: “Not even the recent High Court order has moved the regime to stop acting in a rogue manner.”
Bobi Wine added that Achileo Kivumbi’s “pleas to inform his family members fell on deaf ears.” The party leader said they did not know where they took the head of NUP HQ’s security.
“We do not know what state he is in right now given what onlookers describe as an extremely violent abduction. The criminal regime continues to violate every human right there is in the book,” he said.
Police and other security agencies were yet to confirm or deny ‘abducting’ Achileo Kivumbi.
