National Unity Platform (NUP) secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya says President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni should abolish elections and rule by decree since it seems he doesn’t believe in electoral democracy.
Rubongoya, who was formerly close to Museveni before joining Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s NUP, said the alleged violence and vote rigging in the Kayunga LCV byelection as well as the 2021 general elections held at the start of this year show that the president doesn’t believe in elections.
The SG advised Museveni to officially abolish elections and rule by decree, a style of governance where one person or group makes laws that nobody is allowed to question.
It’s normally dictators, absolute monarchs and military leaders who rule by decree.
“If Gen Museveni doesn’t believe in elections, why does he organise them?” he wondered in an interview with NTV Uganda.
“Why doesn’t he rule by decree?”
Rubongoya also warned that people could seek other options if they lose trust in the electoral process.
“The regime needs to be careful because if you make elections a joke, people will give up on them and then the next option could be something none of us will ever like,” he said.
