Bobi Wine speaks out after photos of him smoking weed were pinned at EC headquarters

National Unity Platform Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has accused security agencies and the Electoral Commission (EC) of failing to apprehend Ugandans who pinned posters with photos of him smoking weed at the elections management body’s headquarters in Kampala.

On December 02, Bobi Wine and a team from NUP spent hours at the EC headquarters to seek chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama and his commissioners’ intervention following days of clashes between his campaign and security agencies.

Chaos in Buikwe, Mukono and Kayunga resulted in injuries.

The confrontations between NUP and security officers followed last month’s protests that started after the arrest, in Luuka District on November 18, of Bobi Wine for flouting Covid19 prevention guidelines.

Despite being released on bail, with caution to limit his campaign meetings to 200 people as guided by the Ministry of Health (MoH), Bobi Wine has continued to hold rallies.

His campaign team’s argument is that those who come to express their love for the NUP presidential candidate can’t be simply turned away.

But as Bobi Wine arrived at the EC for the meeting, he was welcomed by posters showing him smoking. He says he is not ashamed of his history, but wondered how the posters had been pinned at an establishment guarded 24/7.

“As we went to meet the Electoral Commission over our continued brutal treatment and murders of our people, we found these posters all over the perimeter walls surrounding the Electoral Commission offices, guarded by the police,” said Bobi Wine.

“They are too weak to realise that this kind of smear campaign only strengthens us! They think they can use our past to bring us down, yet it is that past that has made us who we are today.”
