Bobi Wine Sends Clear Warning to Museveni: We’ll Remove You From Power through Mass Protests

National Unity Platform (NUP) principal Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has sent a clear warning to Uganda’s long-serving leader Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, putting him on notice that citizens will remove him through protests.

Contrary to his statements ahead of the 2021 presidential elections, Bobi Wine has now changed his tone, finally agreeing with opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye that elections will never remove Museveni.

While still teaming up with now Museveni Minister Norbert Mao of the Democratic Party (DP) as the duo worked on the failed DP Bloc, Bobi Wine was quoted as telling Besigye to stop saying Uganda was not a democracy yet he had stood four time.

But after losing to Museveni in the 2021 presidential election which Besigye did not participate in as a candidate, Bobi Wine seems to have learnt his lessons. Besides, recent byelections seem to have taught Bobi Wine that Museveni and his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) rarely lose polls that matter to them.

Now, Bobi Wine has said the only way to end Museveni’s rule, which will have lasted four decades by the time the president’s current five-year term ends in 2026, is through mass protests.

The singer-turned-politician used NUP’s news conference held at Makerere Kavule, the site for the new party headquarters, to rally his supporters to start protests to end Museveni’s rule.

He claimed he had did his part to expose Museveni through his (Bobi’s] participation in the 2021 election.

The NUP leader now says he did not expect the Electoral Commission (EC) to declare him the winner of last year’s presidential poll. But the same EC declared about 60 members of NUP as elected MPs of the 11th Parliament.

He made it clear that the NUP message was “going to change” with the view of using elections “to trigger change.” He also told his supporters to emulate some youths in Busoga who recently protested the high cost of living and rising commodity prices. (Read Story Here).

As some continue to pester him to ‘command’ Ugandans to protest, Bobi Wine further advised his supporters not to wait for him and other opposition leaders to start the protests or to liberate them since these can be change, the way his former ally Mao in castigating Besigye, has now joined Museveni.

It should be remembered that Mathias Mpuuga, Bobi Wine’s deputy at NUP and also the leader of opposition in parliament has previously told Ugandans that they are on their own regarding the rising cost of living and commodity prices since the opposition leadership had done enough by issuing statements. Mpuuga even told Ugandans not to stop bothering Principal Bobi Wine’s with calls on him to join Besigye protests. (Read Story Here).

Bobi’s new message is a clear warning to Museveni that the opposition could soon unite with the view of using protests to end his rule. In 2011, Besigye’s walk-to-work protests shook Museveni’s government and could only end until the fierce Museveni critic was badly beaten and rushed out of the country for medical attention.
