On December 01, police fired teargas to disperse crowds that had converged for Bobi Wine’s campaign meeting in Kayunga.

According to Ministry of Health (MoH) guidelines, gatherings should be restricted to 200 people to reduce the spread of Covid19 that has claimed over 200 Ugandans.

Last month, the arrest of Bobi Wine for holding mass rallies in disregard of Covid19 prevention guidelines sparked off protests in which 54 people died.

Although court cautioned him against holding rallies, upon release from detention in Jinja’s Nalufenya, Bobi Wine and his NUP team say they are overwhelmed by supporters who come to show their love and support for the youthful politician.

As police attempted to disperse crowds in Kayunga, scores sustained injuries.

Bobi Wine accused the police and army of attacking him and his supporters.

Today’s violence follows that on November 30 in which Bobi Wine accuses police of engineering an accident against his supporters in Nakifuma, Mukono District.

But Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango has dismissed the claims, as well as of reports of death by shooting in Mukono and Buikwe.

“We would also put the fact right that in yesterday’s operation, no life was lost as a result of live bullets, rubber bullets or teargas. One person, Jonathan Ssempala, died at Kawolo Hospital as a result of a road accident at Mayangayanga along Nagoje Road,” said Onyango on December 01.

“The other incident we had in the area was of a car that overturned and injured five people. Four were transferred to Mulago Referral Hospital for treatment while one, Vincent Ssempijja, 18, is still admitted at Kawolo Hospital. The transferred people are Moses Ssentongo, 24, Steven Ssebuliba, 30, Robert Kigozi, 22, and Medi Ssebadeki. All are residents of Nakifuma, Mukono District. All these victims were as a result of road accidents.”

Some media reports have quoted eye witnesses as claiming that a police vehicle deliberately ramming into bodaboda riders in a procession as Bobi Wine headed to Buikwe.
