Bobi Wine protests: Army, LDUs join police to enforce curfew

Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) and Local Defense Unit (LDU) will boost police’s capacity in enforcement of the 9pm curfew as a way of managing violence occasioned by the arrest and detention of presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

On November 20, deputy army spokesperson Lt Col Deo Akiiki announced “UPDF and its auxiliary forces shall support the police to now strictly enforce the CURFEW.”

Lt Col Akiiki warned the public “not to be on roads after 2100hrs (9pm) unless you are authorized to.”

City protests have claimed 28 lives, according to latest figures released by police.

A night curfew has remained in place for months despite the easing of Covid19 lockdown restrictions.

Now, security agencies hope to take advantage of this Covid19 prevention measure to deal a blow to plotters of violence.

LDUs have in recent times been accused of high-handedness. Some lives have been lost and other people injured as LDUs enforced the night curfew guideline.
