Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has defended his brother Fred Nyanzi and Lewis David Rubongoya, the People Power and National Unity Platform (NUP) executive secretary against reports that they are President Yoweri Museveni’s moles.

Talk of Nyanzi and Rubongoya being moles for Museveni and his National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in NUP and the People Power pressure group have persisted given the duo past association with government and the ruling party.

Photos of Rubongoya with Museveni resurfaced online, sparking off claims that the former Makerere University guild speaker was a Museveni mole planted in NUP to spy on Bobi Wine.

But Bobi Wine has defended both his brother and law lecturer, saying he was aware of their past relationship with NRM, but was convinced about their commitment to push for change.

According to Bobi Wine, he met Rubongoya in 2016, and “he was an NRM supporter who disagreed with many things in the party but like others remained there [in NRM].”

On his brother being an NRM cadre, and Aisha Kabanda being a former Museveni RDC, Bobi Wine said: “Friends, we came together as a generation to build a new country.”

“When we see each other, we don’t look at tribe, age, gender, religion or past political affiliations. The people who have been at the helm of People Power come from different tribes, religions and political affiliations,” he said.

“Our movement was and continues to be shaped by Ugandans who felt oppressed, suppressed and exploited, regardless of who they are and where they come from.”

With some members, like his social media manager Ashburg Katto quitting to join Museveni’s NRM, Bobi Wine admitted that “when you are betrayed by someone you hold in high regard, the effect is much more felt.”

Bobi also had no kind words for critics branding NRM defectors moles.

“Anybody who calls people moles because they have left [the NRM government] and joined forces of change is an enemy of the struggle.”
