People Power pressure group leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has announced a merger with little known National Unity Reconciliation an Development Party (NURDP) to form National Unity Platform (NUP) party.
NURDP leader Moses Nkonge Kibalama handed over the party’s leadership to Bobi Wine. Kibalama had registered NURDP in 2004.
Talks for Bobi’s acquisition of the party had been ongoing for months.
Bobi Wine will also be NUP’s presidential candidate in the 2021 election.
According to Kibalama, a July 14 NUP delegates conference resolved to ally with Bobi Wine and People Power.
NUP’s symbol is an umbrella while its colors are red and white.
Bobi Wine hopes to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 election.
His People Power pressure group had already endorsed him as its flag bearer. The group was in the process of picking candidates for other elective positions.
Even politicians from other political parties had picked forms expression of interest forms, since People Power is a pressure group.
But some of these, such as singer Jose Chameleone of the Democratic Party, have to choose between their parties and NUP-People Power.
Bobi Wine choose an obscure NUP after attempts to unite with main opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye became a nightmare.
Besigye’s Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has insisted Bobi Wine must join them if he wants a coalition.
The main opposition political party, FDC is currently having trouble with some of its members.
But its spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda recently blasted the media for exaggerating the magnitude of the trouble within the party.
By launching a party platform, Bobi Wine hopes to outshine FDC in next year’s parliamentary elections to become the main opposition party in Parliament, political observers say.
