More details are emerging on reports of an assassination plot against Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among as her chief bodyguard Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Aggrey Aruho is said to have fled the country at least two weeks before the head of the legislative arm of government made shocking allegations about an attempt to end her life.
Last week, Speaker Among, who is also the Bukedea District Woman MP, told colleagues that she had received a report indicating that her life was in danger, that there was an assassination plot hatched against her, and that her vehicle was being trailed by suspected assassins hellbent on ending her life on earth.
Since Among’s shocking revelation last week, security agencies including Uganda Police Force are said to have started probing these allegations.
As part of the probe, police and the institution of parliament have reportedly picked interest into the curious absence of Aruho from his duty station.
Media reports are describing Aruho’s absence as a “mysterious disappearance” that investigators might link to the reports of the assassination plot as alleged by Speaker Among.
It is said that Aruho had claimed he was sick and needed to seek treatment.
But he would later travel to the US to attend the 34th Uganda North America Association (UNAA) convention.
Held in San Francisco from September 02 through September 05, UNAA was presided over by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa.
Before flying to the US, ASP Aruho reportedly refused to inform the speaker.
His ‘disappearance’ have puzzled police and parliament so much that some staff suspected to have helped Aruho to secure a visa to flee Uganda have been suspended.
These include Louis Bakyenga, the principal private secretary to the Deputy Speaker, and James Bamuwamye, a protocol officer, according to The Daily Monitor.
Bakyenga and Bamuwamye are said to have been grilled by Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige to explain their role in the disappearance of ASP Aruho.
It is said that ASP Aruho dug deep into his pockets and paid for his air ticket to attend the UNAA Convention.
It is not clear if he has returned to Uganda or if he is still hiding in the US.
Some reports have claimed that Aruho’s family lives in the US and that he had chosen to join them.
This points to the possibility of Aruho deserting the Uganda Police Force. It is said that he did not go with or hide the police gun and uniform.
If this claim that Aruho has willingly deserted the UPF is true, then it remains to be seen how his disappearance will be linked to Speaker Among’s reports of an assassination plot.
Police has reportedly declared him a deserter who will have to be punished for illegally leaving his official duty station.
Police is yet to come out to make its official position on the link between ASP Aruho’s disappearance and the speaker’s claims.
