Soroti Woman MP Anna Adeke, Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and other Red Card Front Women Brigade members spent Monday night in Luzira following their arrest in Kampala as they protested high commodity prices and opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s detention.
Besides Adeke, who is also the Deputy President of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in charge of Northern Uganda, and Nyanjura, others who spent the night in Luzira are: Margaret Wokuri Madanda, a former Mbale parliamentary candidate, Susan Nanyonjo, Mariam Kizito and Alice Among.
The state produced Nyanjura, Adeke and their colleagues before the Law Development Centre Court on May 30. Here, acting chief magistrate Augustine Alule charged the opposition women activists with inciting violence and unlawful assembly.
State prosecution told court that in the morning of May 30, the FDC women, while at Mulago Roundabout in Kampala, held an unlawful assembly where they called on Ugandans to protest.
In court the activists were represented by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Samuel Muyizzi and Ivan Bwowe. After denying the charges, the activists, through their lawyers, requested acting chief magistrate Alule to grant them non-cash bail.
But Alule ruled that he needed to peruse the documents presented by the activists’ sureties and to all handle other cases. He remanded Nyanjura, Adeke and their co-protesters to Luzira Prison until May 31 when he will rule on their bail application.
Meanwhile, Dr Besigye remains remanded in Luzira until June 16. Some activists such as Dr Stella Nyanzi have accused Bobi Wine and other opposition leaders for betraying Besigye and the struggle by refusing to join protests against commodity prices and the rumored Museveni-Muhoozi succession plot.
