Col (Rtd) Col Dr Kizza Besigye is Uganda’s larger than life politician who has largely been synonymous with the impoverished country’s opposition politics for many years.
A fierce critic of long-serving President Gen Yoweri Museveni, Dr Besigye has remained a celebrated activist and an anti-government voice even when his party , the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), lost ground to Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) as the main opposition party.
Little wonder that Dr Besigye’s silence in raging political debates had started to become louder.
But the good old medical doctor and politician from Rwakabengo has come out to inform all that he has been out of the country for an extensive health assessment and he is mow fully back at his Kasangati home to plan more campaigns to pile pressure on the Museveni regime.
Besigye flew out of Uganda at the beginning of February 2023 after he began feeling “quite unwell.” Spending most of the time with his family in Geneva, Dr Besigye was advised to take some therapeutic rest, something he says he devotedly did for a period of two months.
Besigye, who is known for his biting humor and sarcasm, even revealed that he had pondered growing and plaiting his hair, just like his son Anselm but would abandon the idea, choosing the good old self.
Thanking his family, friends and the Almighty God, the retired colonel also revealed that he was now set, ready and fit to roll.
“Thankfully, I am back home at Kasangati. Having felt quite unwell during early Feb, I travelled abroad to seek a better assessment. The doctors, among others, advised that I take a therapeutic rest, which I dutifully did- staying with family in Geneva,” wrote Dr Besigye.
“Always grateful to the Lord, the giver and sustainer of life. Grateful to family & friends who cared for me. I toyed with an idea of plaiting my hair- to spice the debate that’s been raging in Uganda, while I was away! Settled for remaining my good old self- now fit and ready to roll.”
