Opposition politician Dr Kizza Besigye has revealed why he didn’t take part in the 2021 presidential election.
Besigye’s FDC fronted party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) as its candidate.
POA came third, behind election winner President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni and his main challenger Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine of NUP.
Besigye, a former Museveni physician, ex-minister and bush war comrade, declined his party’s ticket to stand in the poll.
Yet the seasoned and fiercest Museveni critic had challenged the president in four previous elections.
Speaking during the funeral of Ben Phenehas Kizahi, an FDC member, who died at International Hospital of Kampala (IHK) at the age of 67, last week, Besigye revealed why he opted out of the 2021 poll.
Besigye told mourners at Maya Village, Kitimba Ward in Rukungiri Municipality, that he was angry with some political players who only sought positions.
“I was angry who failed to understand the political dynamics of the time. All they are occupied with are political positions, that is all they want to fight for,” said Besigye.
“I wasn’t angry with the local people but [politicians in the opposition]. That is why my MP now dons yellow [is from the NRM] yet it had been liberated. It pains me that mature people do not understand our struggle.”
