BEHIND BARS: MP who ‘Beat’ Former Museveni Minister Sent to Prison (See Details Here)

A Ugandan MP who defeated the country’s former Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs Adolf Mwesige in the 2021 parliamentary elections has been sent to prison after he failed to pay a loan secured from money lenders.

A number of MPs have over the years got into trouble with money lenders. Some, especially the new ones, have borrowed to finance their new lifestyles as legislators, while others have borrowed to inject cash in their electoral campaigns.

Now another MP is in trouble over failure to pay his debts. Davis Kamukama stole headlines when he defeated Minister Mwesige. Kamukama would later win the Bunyangabu parliamentary seat in 2021.

That year, he is said to have secured about a loan worth Shs29m from Dahu Investments Limited.

The man has reportedly grown to Shs69m, which includes interest.

Available reports indicate that Kamukama would have survived being thrown in jail if he had just paid Shs10m last week and committed to paying the balance in coming weeks and months.

Unable to pay the Shs10m, Kamukama was arrested by Mutesasira Auctioneers. He was later arraigned before Mengo Magistrates Court and sent to prison.

Mengo Chief Magistrate Sharon Nuwaha has commanded Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) to receive MP Kamukama into civil prison and to keep him imprisoned therein for a period not exceeding six months or until the said order shall sooner be fully satisfied.

Meanwhile, there was shock after it emerged that many top MPs have either failed or refused to pay their drivers and personal assistants. (See Details Here).
