President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has revealed he will soon summon MPs from his ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party to discuss a proposed ban on bail for suspected murderers.
Museveni has over the years blasted the judiciary for granting bail to suspected murderers, and suggested that these suspects should be held until investigations and court proceedings have been concluded.
But the judiciary has argued that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The president says it is an abomination to grant killers bail and that, if this continues, acts of mob justice would increase.
“For somebody to kill a person and you give them bail is a provocation,” said Museveni.
“It is abominable. This bail, what is the hurry? Who are you trying to please?”
The president is even willing to put the matter of banning bail to a referendum if Parliament fails to push through an amendment banning the right to bail for suspected murderers.
“We are going to work on this. I would like us to cure this ideological disagreement,” vowed the president.
“I am going to summon the NRM caucus and if necessary, we put it to a referendum.”
