Leaders of Bakonzo living and working in Kampala have raised concern over increased abuse and misuse of drugs by the youth who come to the city seeking employment opportunities.
According to reports, a number of Bakonzo youths in Kampala city and metropolitan areas have become victims of drug abuse and misuse, engaging in marijuana and cigarette smoking, excessive drinking, among other forms of drug abuse.
Julius Basimire, the Chairperson of Bakonzo United Group Nsambya, says beside abuse of drugs, some youths have also joined bad peer groups including criminal groups, with a few losing their lives and others arrested and imprisoned over theft allegations.
Basimire, who attributed the vice to poor upbringing of children by parents, asked parents to always guide their children whenever they come to the city to look for jobs.
He also urged the youth to be focused and engage in productive activities instead of spending time in abusing drugs, something which can easily destroy their future.
Ronald Bwambale, a youth and hotelier staying in Kamwokya, was worried that some female Bakonzo youths had resorted to working as sex workers along streets for survival, something he said damages the cultural image of Bakonzo.
