Attorney General designate Kiryowa Kiwanuka has dismissed reports that police arrested him at a ‘whisky-sipping party during curfew hours.’
A report carried by an online tabloid had claimed Kiwanuka, who is expected to replace William Byaruhanga as Attorney General in coming days, had claimed Kiwanuka was arrested at the weekend at a booze party.
Another tabloid had alleged Kiwanula had bren arrested at the Uganda Golf Club during a raid by police.
The second publication quoted acting Uganda Golf club captain Ruth Ssali sas confirming the Saturday night raid.
“As a result they were rounded up and taken to police for further interrogation. Efforts are underway to secure their release on bond. We request that you remain calm and please observe and adhere to the SOPs put in place,” the publication quoted Ssali as saying in a statement.
It even shared a photo, pointing at one of the men it believed was AG Kiryowa Kiwanuka.
But police political commissar Asan Kasingye rebuked the first tabloid for telling lies.
“I can confirm that this story is not true. Counsel Kiryowa Kiwanuka was not there at the Golf course and therefore, wasn’t among the people arrested by the Police. You could have cross-checked with KMP PRO Lke Owoyesigyire or Uganda Golf Club before making such an allegation,” said Kasingye.
Kasingye’s rebuke to the online publication quickly encouraged Kiwanuka to clear the air.
“Thank you Asan Kasingye. I have been seeing this on social media. I will be the last person to breach the Covid regulations,” said the incoming Attorney General.
“We are living in very dangerous times and I will not expose myself, my family or anyone else to that risk.”
