Secondary school arts and primary school teachers have suspended their strike after a meeting with President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni.
After the meeting, which was also attended by Museveni’s wife and education minister Janet Kataaha Kainembabazi Museveni as well as officials from the Ministry of Public Service, leaders of the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (Unatu) convened another meeting to discuss the way forward.
In their meeting that dragged on foru about three hours, the union discussed the pros and cons of continuing as well as of suspending the strike.
Later, Unatu secretary general Filbert Bates Baguma announced that the union had resolved that the strike be suspended.
With the industrial action, which began on June 15, ending on July 04, Baguma said some teachers are expected in class on July 05, while the official return date for the ‘striking Teachers’ is Wednesday, July 06.
Baguma further revealed that the negotiations between Unatu and the government will continue.H
