Ruhinda County MP Saverino Kahinda Otafiire fumed at reporters who asked him if the ruling NRM party was working out a plan for President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s retirement and a smooth transition of power.
Otafiire, one of the longest serving ministers under Museveni, took oath of office as Ruhinda County MP on May 20.
Gen Museveni, Otafiire’s bush war comrade, has ruled Uganda for 35 years.
He recently took oath of office for a sixth successive five-year elective term at the end of which he will have led Uganda for four decades.
Museveni is aged 76.
With a smooth transition of power eluding Uganda’s post-independence history, political observers hope the NRM can work out a bloodless transfer of power.
But Otafiire attempted to dodge the transition and retirement questions, firing at reporters who sought answers from him after his inauguration.
The outgoing East Africa Affairs minister wondered when journalists would retire from their work, instead of answering when he would leave government.
He also asked reporters if they wished Museveni death after they asked if the NRM had a succession plan.
As far as Otafiire is concerned he and members of the Museveni Government – who most times choose the ‘freedom fighters’ label – were still working to liberate Africa and to secure its future.
