Uganda’s security officers, including detectives from the Uganda Police Force (UPF) and the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) have begun investigating claims of an assasination plot as made by Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.
As such, bodyguards manning the speaker’s residence and officers offering her security at her office have been put on high alert.
UPF spokesperson Fred Enanga told reporters at the police headquarters in Naguru, Kampala on Monday that the office of the speaker of Parliament was a very important one in the country and that if any risks occurred to the person of the speaker, there would be implications for the nation.
Enanga confirmed that UPF was investigating the threats, with the Special Investigations Directorate (SID), based in Kireka, taking the lead but working with sister security agencies.
The police publicist also noted that the probe into claims of an alleged assassination plot against the speaker would be “a protected investigation” to avoid interfering with witnesses.
He went on to reveal that investigating agencies were monitoring the security detail of the speaker and have since put the speaker’s bodyguards and parliamentary police on high alert and ordered them to stay vigilant.
“Our team from Counter-terrorism continues to monitor the security detail of the speaker, and make sure that all-around protection by bodyguards stays vigilant at all levels of her movement and at her residence,” said Enanga.
The police publicist further revealed that detectives will liaise with the office of Speaker Among as a way of identifying the source of the threats against her life. Enanga emphasized that this would be the first step in the probe.
Meanwhile, Speaker Anita Among’s chief bodyguard has mysteriously fled the country amidst reports of an assassination plot against his boss. (Read Story Here).
