Amuriat detained at Katwe Police Station hours after Court granted him bail following a night in Mpigi police cell

Uganda’s main opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat (POA) has been detained in Kampala hours after being granted bail in Mpigi District.

On January 11, Amuriat appeared before Mpigi Grade One Court by Magistrate Ruth Nabaasa.

He was charged with the offence of “accepting to be carried in a dangerous manner.”

Magistrate Nabaasa granted Amuriat non-cash bail at about 11am.

Two hours later, police arrested at Lubiri Ring Road, Mengo.

His FDC party says Amuriat was “on his way to Party Headquarters.”

Amuriat had spent the night in detention at Mpigi Central Police Station.

Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed Amuriat’s arrest.

“Police at Katwe are holding Presidential candidate Patrick Oboi Amuriat for Doing a negligent act likely to cause an infection of a disease and deliberately blocking traffic at the busy Natete-Ndeeba road, while deliberately obstructing other road users and motorists,” said Oweyisigyire in a statement.

“Arrested also, is one of his escorts Police Constable Erikitoi Emmanuel, for obstruction and insubordination.”
