CONGRATULATIONS! Agather Atuhaire on 2024 TIME100 Next list

Ugandan activist and journalist Agather Atuhaire has made the TIME100 NEXT list of the world’s influential leaders and the next generation of individuals shaping the world.

Those that made the list include advocates, leaders, innovators and artists.

In an article explaining how the list was made, Time Magazine said those who made the list were “individuals who are not waiting long in life to make an impact. Nor are they eager to respect the status quo by following the traditional power structures and pathways that have determined what influence looked like in the past.”

“Now in its fifth year, the TIME100 Next list was created to recognize that many of today’s most influential leaders,” the magazine further noted.

“TIME100 Next has no age requirements; its aim is to recognize that influence does not have them either, nor does leadership look like it once did. Indeed, the majority of the individuals on this year’s list are leaders of color; more than half are women.”

Time Magazine praised Agather Atuhaire as being engaged in “powerful activism stands out especially in Uganda, where female human-rights defenders have been targeted by authorities with trumped-up charges, arrests, and convictions based on draconian cyberlaws.

Those who included Agather Atuhaire on the list were hopeful that her “incredible courage will continue to be a formidable challenge to public institutions and officials that have long conducted themselves with impunity in Uganda.”

In the profile linked to her name of the list, the Magazine explained Agather Atuhaire’s work, recognizing her efforts and those of her colleagues at AGORA, which has organized online exhibitions exposing government failures.

“Agather Atuhaire wears many hats: journalist, lawyer, human rights activist, and whistle-blower. She worked as a journalist and used social media activism to expose maladministration, high profile corruption, and malfeasance by public officials in Uganda,” Time Magazine further said of Agather Atuhaire.

“As co-leader of a powerful and growing online human-rights movement called AGORA, Agather uses social media to crowd-source information on rights abuses by those in power, and to demand accountability from government, parliament, and civil society in Uganda.”

Agather Atuhaire said she was honored to make the prestigious list.

“I am on the 2024 #TIME100NEXT list what an honor to be named among the top 100 individuals defining the next generation of leadership!!” she wrote on microblogging site X, formerly Twitter, where her activism and online exhibitions are popular.

Ugandans have been congratulating Agather Atuhaire on the milestone.

It should be remembered that Agather Atuhaire has previously won the E.U. Human Rights Defenders Award 2023 and International Women of Courage Award 2024. (See Details Here and There).

But she has made enemies out of government officials. Months ago, she was thrown out of a house she was renting in Kisaasi. (Read Story Here).
