ADF ATTACK ON UGANDAN SCHOOL: Museveni Sends Wife Janet & Top UPDF Commanders to Kasese as Death Toll Rises Above 40

Ugandan President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni, who is the Commander-in-Chief (CiC) of armed forces, has sent his wife, Education and Sports Minister Janet Kataaha Kainembabazi Museveni, and top commanders of the UPDF, the national army, to the Western Uganda district of Kasese following a deadly attack by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels on a secondary school.

Suspected ADF rebels raided Lhubirira Secondary School last night, killed over 40 students and abducted several others.

Security agencies said they were pursuing the suspected rebels. No arrests had been confirmed by the time we compiled this report.

Now, Gen Museveni, who is still on sick leave battling Covid19, has dispatched the army’s top commanders: Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), and Lt Gen Apollo Kayanja Muhanga, the Commander of Land Forces (CLF) to Kasese to conduct “on spot assessment.”

UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye also confirmed that the president had sent the Minister of Education and Sports to Kasese.

“H.E has dispatched the Ministry of Education and sports to commiserate with the school. Meanwhile, the CDF and CLF are joining the UPDF Division Commander on the ground for an on spot assessment,” said Kulayigye.

Janet Museveni, the first lady, is the overall supervisor of education institutions in the country.

An attack on a school is not only a security matter but also an issue of education since learning and teaching must happen in safe environments.
