Uganda’s government and military has spoken out after the US government slapped financial sanctions against UPDF’s commandant of Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) Maj Gel Abel Kandiho.
The sanctions were announced on December 07 by the US Treasury Department.
The Treasury said Kandiho was involved in acts of repression in Uganda.
Now, in a statement, UPDF spokesperson Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso said the army has been “officially notified about the unilateral financial sanctions against Maj Gen Abel Kandiho the Chief of Military Intelligence – UPDF by the United States of America (USA) government.”
But Brig Gen Byekwaso said government was disappointed with the manner in which the decision to slap sanctions against Kandiho was reached.
She added that Kampala would seek answers from the Joe Biden Administration.
“As a country and UPDF in particular, a reputable government institution, we are disappointed that such a decision could be made by a country we consider friendly, a partner and a great ally, without due process and in total disregard of the principle of ‘fair hearing,’ coupled with failure to make the necessary consultations,” said Byekwaso.
“Going forward, we will be seeking clarification from the United States of America Government/authorities to be able to determine way forward.”
