Government has dismissed claims by National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine that the the Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni administration planned to kidnap his children and wife Barbie Itungo.
On January 07, Bobi Wine issued a lengthy statement after being criticized for sending his children to the US a week to the January 14 presidential election.
In his statement, Bobi Wine claimed security agencies had planned to kidnap his children and wife.
“That is why therefore, when I received information of pending physical attacks on me, my wife and kidnap of our children, friends in the diaspora reached out to us, offered to host them for a while!” wrote Bobi Wine.
“That does not mean that me or my wife are any safer by remaining around. But our effort is to ensure they don’t kidnap one of these minors and try to use them to coerce us into subjugation!”
Now government says the Museveni administration has “a long good track record of not harming or killing politicians, their families or opponents.”
Government dismissed Bobi Wine’s claims as false, further alleging that the singer-turned-politician was aping veteran opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye’s tricks.
“Kyagulanyi is lying because he has been caught off guard yet he has been encouraging other people’s relatives into violent riots and harm’s way,” read a statement released by the Uganda Media Center on January 07.
“It’s an old narrative previously employed by Winnie Byanyima, Kizza Besigye and their surrogates. Remember Besigye and Sejusa even fled Uganda claiming their were in danger. Besigye and Byanyima claimed that Besigye would be poisoned while in Luzira prison 2006.”
