The Ministry of Education and Sports has announced dates for the selection of students interested in technical and vocational studies. The admission process to the TVET institutions will include interviews at the regional centres.
Loy K Abaine Muhwezi, the Commissioner Technical Vocational Education and Training Operations and Management at the education ministry, has explained that the under the TVET Policy, 2019 Standard 24 section 5 of the TVET Operational Standards, stipulates that admission of trainees under TVET shall be decentralized.
Muhwezi also noted that the NRM manifesto highlights that enrollment in TVET institutions is very low and calls for relaxing admission procedures to improve access and increase enrollment.
The Commissioner went on to say that it was against this background that the Ministry initiated and implemented decentralized admissions for the first time in 2021. Vocational/Farm/Technical Institutes registered an increase of 1,363 or 25.5 per cent females and 1,654 or 11 per cent male trainees. The overall increase in enrollment in 2022 was 3,017 or 34.8 per cent for this category.
Uganda Community Polytechchnics and Technical Schools also registered an increase in enrollment of 646 or 34.7 per cent female and 1,059 or 27 per cent male trainees. The total increase in enrollment was 2,312 trainees or 83.9 per cent for this category.
“Thus, for academic year 2022, a total of 30,490 trainees were enrolled in Technical/Vocational/Farm institutes, Community Polytechnics and Technical Schools,” further noted Abaine Muhwezi.
“This year the Ministry of Education and Sports is expecting an increase in enrollment of 21,776 trainees for these categories of institutions and an overall enrollment of 40,000 trainees.”
Now, the Ministry has set dates and announced venues for admissions to TVET institutions. According to the Commissioner, the decentralized admissions activity has been scheduled to take place from February 20 to February 23 at regional admissions centres.
The four regional centers are: Uganda Youth Development Center for the Northern Region, Nyamitanga Technical Institute for the Western Region, ), St Kizito Technical Institute Madera, Soroti for Eastern Uganda; and Ntinda Vocational and Technical Institute for Central Region.
