Uganda’s President Gen Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni has ordered that an official funeral be held in honour of his former critic Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere. Dr Ssemogerere died on Friday, November 18, 2022 at his home in Rubaga in the capital Kampala.
Dr Ssemogerere was a former president of the Democratic Party (DP) — and served as leader of the party, one of the oldest in the country’s political history. Kawanga Ssemogerere also served as a minister and deputy prime minister in Gen Museveni’s NRM government. (Read More on Ssemogerere’s quick profile HERE).
The family had released a provisional burial program pending government input. The tentative program is expected to change after Museveni’s Presidency Minister Milly Babirye Babalanda confirmed that Gen Museveni had ordered that an official funeral be held in honour of Ssemogerere to celebrate his life and contribution to Uganda.
“H.E the President has this morning directed that fallen former DP President General, Hon. Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, is accorded an official funeral. All arrangements are, accordingly, underway,” said Minister Babalanda.
An official from the Presidency emphasized that Dr Ssemogerere will not be given a state funeral but rather an official one. The official further explained that for the former, full protocol is strictly followed, while for the latter, a few protocols are followed. In this case,
A comprehensive state funeral program is expected to be released in the course of the day, and could significantly alter the tentative one earlier issued by the family and members of the Kawanga Ssemogerere burial committee. (You can see the provisional Ssemogerere burial program Here).
