Joel Ssenyonyi, the Nakawa West MP and Chairperson of Public Accounts Committee on Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (Cosase), has accused a minister in President Yoweri Kaguta Tibuhaburwa Museveni’s government of threatening and intimidating him over the ongoing probe into national carrier Uganda Airlines and its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jennifer Bamuturaki.
The probe dominated this weeks news headline in mainstream and online media, with shocking revelations emerging from the interface between MPs on Ssenyonyi’s Cosase and officials from Uganda Airlines.
Now, Ssenyonyi, who doubles as the spokesperson of Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine’s National Unity Platform (NUP) political party, has claimed that a minister is threatening to do something bad to him if he does not stop ‘harassing’ Bamuturaki, his relative.
The youthful Ssenyonyi says that the veteran minister from Tooro has told him that he does not have the powers to grill Bamuturaki the way he has been doing this whole week.
That the elderly minister even threatened to mobilize his and Bamuturaki’s relatives to storm Ssenyonyi’s Cosase committee and office to express their disappointment with the manner in which their daughter has supposedly been humiliated in the committee the NUP publicist chairs.
Today, Ssenyonyi has revealed the name of the minister who reportedly wants him to back off the investigation whose findings — including how Bamuturaki got appointed and her academic qualifications — have so far shocked Ugandans.
The youthful NUP boss claims that on Friday, August 18, the minister called him to sound his warning.
“Yesterday, I got a call from Tourism [Wildlife and Antiquities] Minister Tom Butime, threatening and intimidating me over Uganda Airlines probe, because apparently Jennifer Bamuturaki is his relative,” revealed Ssenyonyi.
The first time MP has since reported Minister Butime to Uganda Police Force (UPF).
“I’ve reported this at [the Kampala Central Police Station] CPS, Ref GEF 60/2022 for it to be on record,” the MP noted.
Ssenyonyi says he does not want police to beef up his security by assigning officers to him, but to rather investigate the elderly Museveni minister for intimidating and threatening him.
He insisted that his security is in the hands of God. He added that even those who had bodyguards, such as former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi, were killed.
Ssenyonyi went on to note that he was aware of what Minister Butime was capable of doing, especially given his alleged previous altercations, including one involving a Resident District Commissioner (RDC) and a political opponent.
But the NUP spokesperson vowed not to give in to intimidation.
“No one, I repeat, no one, will cause me to back down,” Ssenyonyi swore.
