Uganda Police Force (UPF) has offered more details on the killing of Sheikh Muhammad Kirevu aka Abbas Kirevu in Kyengera, Wakiso District.
According to UPF spokesperson Fred Enanga, it was Musa Abdullah Ayebare, one of the 13 suspected ADF rebel recruits intercepted en route to terror camps in DR Congo, that implicated Sheikh Kirevu.
Ayebare is said to have claimed that Sheikh Kirevu recruited him and others.
The suspected recruit even knew Kirevu’s two homes: in Gangu along Busabala Road and at Katereke in Kyengera Town Council.
“Out of the 13, a one Musa Abdullah Ayebare, led the team to the home of Sheikh Muhammad Kirevu aka Abbas Kirevu, who recruited him, located at Gangu, Busabala Road,” said Enanga.
“He was not around and he further led them to his second home, located at Katereke cell, Kyengera town council in Wakiso District.”
Enanga also claimed that after his arrest, Sheikh Kirevu attempted to escape and was put out of action.
“The Sheikh was arrested and resisted handcuffs. He however, attempted to escape while being escorted to the patrol car, which led to a shooting, killing him instantly,” claimed Enanga.
The police publicist further described Kirevu as one of the “strong ADF rebel collaborators who were using their networks to identify vulnerable individuals and families, to recruit from.”
“They thereafter, facilitated their movement to the DRC, for training and radicalization into the rebel ranks. They were also providing material support to operatives involved in the terror attacks,” added Enanga.
